Procedure
-
Stage one
Document Preparation
After an initial assessment of eligibility, we begin with document preparation, which involves gathering all necessary legal records to support the request. A key part of this stage is obtaining evidence that confirms the applicant’s ancestor held legal status in Lithuania. This means verifying not only that they emigrated from Lithuania but also that they had recognized residency rights according to historical legal standards.
Gathering such evidence is not limited to consulting Lithuanian or broader archives. In most cases, it requires legal procedures such as formal applications to judicial institutions. Without professional guidance, this stage can take several years or may encounter significant obstacles. However, with expert assistance, the process typically takes six to eight weeks.
Once all the required records are obtained, and the applicant has secured supporting documents from their country of residence, we proceed with legal verification of the documents.
On average, it takes two to four months to complete this stage. The total time depends on how quickly the applicant can acquire the necessary records from their home country.
-
Stage two
Review Process
The second stage involves submitting the request for review by the relevant Lithuanian authorities. This is typically the longest and most patience-testing stage. The authorities are legally required to process these requests within 12 months from the date of submission.
Important Update: In October 2024, a regulatory change extended the review period from 6 months to 12 months, significantly increasing the overall processing timeline.
Once approval is granted, we will provide the applicant with an official confirmation document. The applicant can then proceed with obtaining travel documentation, which must be done in person at the nearest Lithuanian diplomatic office or within Lithuania.
-
Stage three
Additional Evidence Collection
If the reviewing authorities determine that further supporting documents are required, an additional stage—collecting supplementary evidence—will take place.
If the request is not approved, there will be no payment required. Expenses incurred on the Lithuanian side, such as archive research, application-related charges, and document translations, are covered by IN JURE Law Firm, with no obligation for reimbursement.
Total Estimated
The standard process typically takes 14 to 16 months, though it may take longer in more complex cases.
Previously, applications were processed within 10-14 months, but due to the regulatory change in October 2024, the review period was extended to 12 months, increasing the total processing time.

Eligibility for Lithuanian Heritage-Based Recognition
To qualify for recognition of Lithuanian heritage-based status, certain criteria must be met. You must have a direct ancestral connection, meaning at least one of your parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents must have held legal residency in Lithuania between 1918 and 1940. Additionally, your ancestor must have relocated from Lithuania before March 11, 1990, when the country regained independence.
For those whose ancestors migrated to former Soviet Union territories, eligibility may still be possible depending on the circumstances and timeframe of their departure.
🔹 Check your eligibility by using the short test at the top of this page.
Required Documents
To proceed with verification of Lithuanian heritage, the following documents and details are typically needed:
Proof of Ancestral Connection: A description of your family relationship with the Lithuanian ancestor (e.g., parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent).
Ancestor’s Information: Full name, date of birth, known addresses in Lithuania, and any information about their parents or siblings.
Family Members Applying Together: List of relatives who wish to apply, scanned copies of their identification documents, postal addresses, and contact numbers.
Note: While possessing original Lithuanian documents can be beneficial, they are not mandatory for the process. Additional supporting evidence can help, but the absence of these documents does not prevent an application.
Dual Nationality Considerations
Obtaining recognition of Lithuanian heritage does not necessarily require renouncing your current nationality. Lithuania permits dual status under specific conditions, including heritage-based applications. This allows individuals to reconnect with their Lithuanian origins while maintaining their existing nationality, offering greater flexibility for those looking to strengthen their ties to Lithuania.
How Long Does the Process Take?
The journey to obtaining recognition of Lithuanian heritage status typically begins with a 2 to 4-month preparation phase, depending on how quickly the required documents are secured from your country of residence. Once submitted, the review process by the relevant Lithuanian authorities generally takes 12 months.
In total, the procedure usually spans 14 to 16 months, though more complex cases may require additional time.
